I am noble born, but known to rest
In the quiet keeping of rich and poor alike.
I am the joy of plunderers, who will reveal me,
To a stranger ere to friends, whether I proclaim
The wealth of cities, the splendor of halls, or the glory of God.
The wise most like my strange way of offering wisdom
To many without once speaking a word.
Earth-dwellers eagerly seek my foot-marks
But often I hide my tracks.
What am I?
Treasure.
Oops. Learning how to do this. Chuck answered Bene on Ian’s guess.
Water
You and Kevin were exploring a similar line of thought. I proclaim, however, that a babbling brook speaks only babble, babble, babble.
A riddle?
It is a treasure, but you can’t touch it.
Thanks for playing! – Chuck
My guess is: A Dream.
David – that’s not the answer for This riddle.
The stars
Stars is a wonderful guess, Jane. It’s more elevated than the traditional answer.
Gold
Knowledge is my second guess
Knowledge figures in the answer, but it isn’t specific enough to be the traditional answer.
The Moon
Another elevated guess – the Zen moon is probably closer than the celestial transit maker – but… Try again!
My guess is that it has to be a dream, but I can’t make that work with hiding tracks.
Two for Dream. I suppose “hiding tracks” could be forgetting the dream. But – Dream is not the traditional answer.
The Bible?
The liturgical speakers read the Bible every Sunday out loud – this thing never speaks a word.
Possibly the Trinity of water, ice and Vapor. Kevin cray all right
This is a very thoughtful answer that I will remember for future riddles. Not the answer to this traditional one.
Silence
Good thinking. However, this thing makes footprints and walking on the earth makes sound.
Sasquatch, hahah
Grace
Grace does not leave footmarks – to solve the riddle it has to fit with every line’s clue. Thanks for participating, Mary.
A vision?
Kathleen, the interesting answers today so far, like your “Vision” and Mary’s ‘Grace” and Zoe’s “Silence”, are abstract answers. The line of thought you all are following works for several lines but not all of them. The traditional answer is not an abstract concept.
Snow storm
Len, that’s a solid guess for a Montana winter person, but not the traditional answer. Thanks so much for joining in the game.
First answer: A spark (fire) Second answer: A dictionary.
My nearly asleep comment to Lola last night was – Dictionary turned inside out: eating the words and learning nothing. Wonderful.
